Film Round-Up

Black Swan (2010), directed by Darren Aronofsky

I saw this with my little brother and dad before I left Florida. It was entertaining, but relied to much on cheap tricks to drive a rather shallow plot and I was definitely not into the the pseudo-“deep” message it was trying to advance about the relationship between art and eroticism (namely, the idea that frigid women just need a good fuck if they want their artistic careers to flourish). Spoiler warning: the was a point at which I thought the film might be redeemed—during the lesbianism part—but then it got reabsorbed by the hetero-narrative. I thought maybe that part of the film meant that she didn’t want to fuck men, but then it suggested that she was actually obsessed with the womanizing dance director douche bag, and the brief lesbian subtext was recast as experimentation and/or imaginary narcissism.
