Fact: Whenever we see someone/something we like, the pupils of our eyes dilate and grow larger. It’s almost as if our eyes are trying to see as much of this as possible. This is an involuntary and uncontrollable physiological response.
(via northheart)
usually, when one goes to the ophthalmologist, eye drops are used to dilate the pupils in order to get a better look at the retina.
when i was at the ophthalmologist last week, he told me my pupils were already so big that he had no need to dilate them futher.
women in italy used to use drops made from nightshade to dilate their pupils in order to seem more aroused. the oxytocin rush that happens from bodies together can stimulate the dilation of pupils immensely. dilated pupils are known clinically as mydriasis, and they result from over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system.
the first time i ever realized my pupils were disproportionately large, i was talking to the first boy who ever touched me, before he ever had.
“your pupils are huge, do you know that?”
“no.”
“are you on coke?”
“…no.”
“it’s crazy, it looks like you’re tripping.”
i didn’t know, then, what the conversation was actually about.
and i know it’s fallacious to read narrative into the body (sontag’s illness as metaphor comes to mind) but my dilated pupils mean something, i think.
because when you look at my eyes, they’re almost black. eyes are windows, mine are wide open, and it’s how i can’t help but take it all in.
